The construction industry is experiencing challenging
economic times. All
economic indicators point to difficult times ahead,
especially in the short term. While credit is
tightening and unemployment is on the rise, construction
projects are being put on hold and some are being
cancelled. Of course the economic squeeze is not
particular to the construction industry since it is
being felt by the entire nation and most of the world.
This did not happen overnight, it was
several years in the making. The weakening of the dollar
and the astronomical cost of crude oil brought this
issue to the forefront. However, this is precisely the
time that the industry must maintain unity and work
through the downturn as a united force. Most experts
agree that it may take several years to overcome these
difficult times; nevertheless, the
construction industry will come out stronger. Let’s not
forget that it is during these tough times that we all
learn the essence of most things, and begin to mature
into better professionals and in turn become better
members of society.
Remember that it took several devastating
hurricanes to understand the necessity of constructing
buildings that would withstand their destructive
forces. Additionally, the realization that our mother
earth is fragile, has forced us to think in terms of
sustainable design and construction.
In this issue we welcome another hurricane
season as well as highlight those projects that are
“Going Green.” Additionally, we published a special
pullout section (PAD Update 2008) to provide you with
the latest information regarding products approved for
construction in Florida. Remember there is a
presidential election this year. Go out and vote.
